Cosmetic Surgery v. Plastic Surgery – There is a difference! The bigger question: Is your provider properly trained?

Cosmetic Surgery is a unique discipline of medicine focused on enhancing appearance through surgical and aesthetic techniques.  Cosmetic Surgery is elective and can be performed on all areas of the head, neck, and body to aid the patient in achieving their aesthetic goal for the targeted/treated area.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a surgical specialty dedicated to reconstruction of facial and body defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and disease intended to correct dysfunctional areas of the body.

Cosmetic Surgery and Plastic Surgery are not the same thing. Plastic surgeons’ residency training mainly focuses on the plastic and reconstruction procedures and as a sub-specialty, cosmetic procedures and aesthetic techniques. A surgeon fellowship trained and Board Certified in Cosmetic Surgery focuses only on aesthetic, cosmetic procedures and treatments.

Within the field of plastic surgery there are many specialties such as hand surgery, reconstructive surgery, pediatric plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery. So, the term Cosmetic Surgery could mean a specialist within the field of cosmetic plastic surgery that is an expert in aesthetic procedures. But, do not assume. It is important to ask.

Unfortunately, physicians are able to offer cosmetic surgery and aesthetic services with limited training (week or weekend courses) if any and without plastic or cosmetic surgery fellowships or Board Certifications.

The most important thing when considering a surgical procedure or aesthetic treatment is to ensure you select a well-trained surgeon who has had experience and training in the area of interest. It is important to know that your surgeon has the ability to care for you not just before the procedure, but in the event a complication that occurs during a surgery or a treatment. Could your provider provide comprehensive care for you? Does your provider have hospital surgery privileges at a one of our area hospitals? Are you in the right hands?
